Cancer Center Doctors

Joseph Hanley, Ph.D., D.A.B.R.

As director of the Medical Physics section of The Cancer Center's Department of Radiation Oncology, Joseph Hanley, Ph.D., D.A.B.R., oversees the department's physicists, the highly skilled professionals who work with the radiation oncologists to calculate the proper dose of radiation for individual patients. The physicists also ensure that the machines used in radiation therapy administer the correct dosage of radiation to the patients. Dr. Hanley is also the chairman of The Cancer Center's Technology Review Committee.
Dr. Hanley's research includes investigations into the use of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiotherapy to treat a number of different types of cancer, including prostate cancer, head and neck tumors, and lung tumors. From 2005-2006, he was president of the New Jersey Medical Physics Society. He is an active member of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). He is a member of the Therapy Physics Council which has direct authority and responsibility over all AAPM scientific activities pertaining to radiation therapy physics. He also sits on Task Group 142 whose charge is to rewrite the policy on of the Quality Assurance of Medical Linear Accelerators. Dr. Hanley is also a member of the Electronic Media Coordinating Committee and is the New Jersey state representative to the AAPM Board. He is also an abstract reviewer for the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and is guest editor for the major journals in the medical physics and radiation oncology field.
