Research by Urologists Shows that Cryoablation is Effective in Treating Renal Tumors in Patients with One Kidney

A clinical research study conducted by a urologic oncology team headed by Chairman of Urology Ihor S. Sawczuk, M.D., and Vice Chairman Ravi Munver, M.D., has been published in Advances in Urology.

“Cryoablation of Small Renal Tumors in Patients with Solitary Kidneys: Initial Experience” was undertaken to evaluate the role of cryoablation in destroying renal (kidney) tumors while preserving kidney function in patients who have only one kidney. Cryoablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses freezing techniques to destroy cancerous tissue.

The results of this study proved that cryoablation is an effective option to the surgical removal of part of a kidney in patients who have only one kidney. The patients’ kidney function was preserved, and there was minimal risk of the tumor recurring.
